A chapter in Kilowatt history closed recently, when the General Motor Units, at the Garrison were officially retired from commercial operation.
The retirement of the units comes after over four decades of service and signals the first time since 1911 that diesel generators will not be in operation at the Garrison.
Having been installed between 1964 and 1967, the units had reached the end of their normal working lives. High maintenance costs were taken into consideration and with the new Low Speed Diesels at Spring Garden running smoothly, the time had come for the removal of the GM units from the generating system. The retirement of the GMs constitutes part of our long-term generation development plan and we wish to assure our customers that our Company is fully equipped to continue to provide them with quality service to which they have become accustomed.
