When the curtain came down on the 21st Annual Awards Ceremony of The Barbados Light & Power Company Ltd., awards had been presented in areas of Long Service, Safety, Customer Service, Perfect Attendance, Total Quality, special effort and outstanding achievement.
According to our Managing Director, Andrew Gittens, The Barbados Light & Power has long been a proponent of service excellence in Barbados and in his Keynote Address, he stressed the importance of implementing standards and achieving the kind of service excellence which will set Barbados apart from other territories in the region offering similar products and services. While commending Government's NISE project, Mr. Gittens supported the view that it is our people who will make the difference in securing our island's reputation as the gem of the Caribbean. He expressed his pride in the work done by the Company's employees and voiced his pleasure that the Annual Awards Ceremony was seen by Light & Power as a means of recognising hard work and that it was, in essence, a celebration of human endeavour. He said while there could only be one winner of each award, in his eyes, those persons who were nominated were all winners.
By the end of the evening, two employees had been singled out for their exceptional performance in 2005, nabbing the titles of Employee of the Year and Supervisor of the Year. The winners of these titles are the ones who have accumulated the most points in the combined areas of assessment by their supervisors against agreed criteria and have undergone an interview before a panel. Tops in this regard were Anderson Henry of the Generation Department and James Hinds of the Customer Services Department, who earned the respective titles of Employee of the Year and Supervisor of the Year.
James Hinds has had a long association with The Barbados Light & Power, having first joined the Company in 1982 as a Grade 3 Worker in the Electrical Maintenance Section of the then Production Department. He was a Finalist for the "Employee Of The Year" Award in 1988 and was promoted to the level of Technical Assistant in June 1989. When he resigned from the Company the following year, little did he know that he would return in 2001, when he resumed his association with Light & Power as a Technical Services Representative in the Planning Department.
He served in that Department for 2 years, after which he was promoted to the position of Technical Field Supervisor, in the Customer Services Department.
As a cooperative and loyal member of the Department, James currently supervises the Meter Reading Section of the Company's operations, where he continues to make a name for himself as a no-nonsense individual, who expects nothing less than 100% effort from both himself and his staff.
Anderson Henry joined the Light & Power team in December 1992, as a Trainee Mechanic and climbed steadily through the grades of competency set out in his job. In 1996, Anderson was a Finalist for the "Employee Of The Year" Award and the recipient of the Safety Award Work Habits, an achievement which he repeated four years later, having also been a nominee for the award in 1999.
Now a full-fledged Mechanic in the Generation Department, Anderson is known for his consistent performance and positive attitude toward his supervisors and co-workers. A former member of the Company's Employee Relations Council, Anderson currently serves as a Union Delegate for the Company and is a member of the Company's Job Evaluation team. He also serves as the Secretary on the Board of the Light & Power Employee Cooperative Credit Union and has been described as an effective leader in the making. Methodical and thorough, Anderson exhibits great respect for the Company's safety rules and employs them in his daily activities. His performance frequently exceeds the requirements of the job and he continues to give a good account of himself in every aspect of his work.
